These last years, apart from the rendering of popular comic strips and the adaptation of TV series for the big screen, American cinema feels a vivacious interest for Oriental culture, especially the Japanese one.
In the derivative "the Last Samurai" , Tom Cruise discovered the secrets and treasures of Japanese civilization while Sofia Coppola used the city of Tokyo as the backdrop for her triumphant "Lost in Translation" Gore Verbinski chose a more direct and easy way to get interested in Japanese culture: to make a remake of a Japanese movie which became a sleeper: "Ringu" Against all odds, he made a killing with it although he's an uneven director.
Some friends had told me: "don't watch "the Ring", it's a hokey movie". I think they misjudged it and I found this supernatural thriller quite intriguing and gripping. It has enough commendable stuff in store to grab the audience. I haven't seen the original movie and so I will avoid any comparison. The starting point promises great things and Verbinski will deliver them throughout his flick.
The main character, Rachel wants to investigate about a mysterious and cursed videotape which causes the death of the viewer seven days after the latter watched it. What do these outlandish and eerie images mean? What lies beneath them? She travels to the place and finds the deadly video and after watching the weird footage, her telephone rings. When she takes a picture of herself, she sees her image blurred the same way that happened with the teenagers.
She makes a copy of the cursed tape to her acquaintance, the skeptical coroner Choi Yeol. Together they seek for a hint, and find that it was taped thorough telekinesis by Eun-suh, a psychic girl that had disappeared years ago.
When Sun-ju's little daughter watches the movie, Sun-ju has a stronger reason to unravel the mystery to save her daughter and her own lives. Not Rated. Did you know Edit. Best version besides the original Japanese versions. Damn, Koreans can make great films, just like their Japanese, Chinese and Taiwanese counterparts. Sure it may be somewhat simple in the Special Effects department, but that usually does work the best when working with supernatural horror films.
This one, as well as many Japanese horror films and an earlier Korean techno-horror film called "Screen Sairen", "Ring Virus" as well as "Ringu" has quite an original plot. An accursed video tape is being spread around and people who don't copy it and share it or live a lonely life, will die.
Instead, it seems to start off with being rather kind and innocent, yet abstract looking, which makes things much more terrifying. The settings of the film are quite excellent. The scenes filmed on the Cheju Island, is quite lush looking and beautiful, I started to wish I was on the Korean islands.
If you can find this film, please get it. I know it is hard to find, but it is worth it, much more than the US version. PS, Du-na Bae, the young adult actress who plays Eun-suh, is quite creppy looking, as well as gorgeous! Details Edit. Release date June 12, South Korea.
